My Tech Ed Sessions

August 13, 2009 Leave a comment

I’ve uploaded my Tech Ed Sessions onto Skydrive. The MDX session ( BIN 307  ) is quite handy since the code I’ve used is in the deck itself. As for the other session , I suppose it’s not much use without all the code for the demos, but those of you who attended the session might find the deck useful. Anyway, the links :

Tech -Ed Africa Update

August 5, 2009 1 comment

Well Tech Ed Africa 2009 is now officially over. I think it went quite well , saw lots of people, my personal highlights :
1) HP server for R499 – wha? This has nothing to do with SQL and BI ? No but I’m a geek and now I have a new toy. A proper HP server that they were selling for R499 ( about $65 ) on a special Tech-Ed promotion. Of course I bought one. I should have bought two. It’s not too bad , you can view the model here.Once it’s delivered I’ll have a new toy to upgrade and benchmark…. he he he……
2) Project Gemini – OK back to work stuff, we saw Project Gemini for the first time in South Africa and it was awesome. For one thing , it’s going to be free. Secondly, it brings all the advanced data analysis functionality into Excel, a familiar tool. We can’t wait to get our hands on this……
3) Windows Phone – My Geek side taking over again, we saw the announcement and screenshots of Windows Phone ( previously Windows Mobile 6.5). There’s going to be an app store and multitouch… and the new interface looks good. Ok most of this has been floating around the internet for a while, but Windows is making a comeback in the mobile space….
4) Lots of interest in MS BI – We had lots of people at the BI sessions, asking lots of difficult questions, good to see. And people were dying for info on SQL 2008 R2, Report Builder 3.0 and Performance Point services…
Of course I think people once again enjoyed having Tech Ed in Durban at the ICC. The weather was great for this time of year. On the downside there were no deals on Netbooks or phones at the event. Anyway as soon as I have a chance I’ll put some of the demo’s up on this blog , that I showed during the presentations.
